QUETTA: The Convention of the representatives of the Local Bodies would be convened in Quetta after Eidul Azha.
This was announced by the Mayor Quetta Metropolitan Corporation (QMC), Dr. Kalimullah Khan while addressing the assembly of councilors of the Metropolitan Corporation here the other day. The Convention would discuss the issues related to impediments in delegation of powers to the local bodies’ institutions including Metropolitan Corporation and other ones.
The Mayor regretfully pointed out that the elected representatives of the local bodies are not being given powers, so we have decided to convene a convention after Eid to discuss the situation and take a decision about future course of action about our authority.
“We would get powers as per the constitution, or else we would go homesâ€, asserted the Mayor while addressing the QMC councilors.
Dr. Kalimullah said that the Mayor is given special importance in other countries, but here we are on the mercy of the Local Government department.
He said that apparently, he is the title-holder of the Quetta city, but practically, he has no authority to transfer even a single employee of the Corporation, he added.
He also pointed out that it is our responsibility to carry out development activities in the metropolis while the members of the assembly should focus on the legislation and planning.
He stressed that the status and right of the LB elected representatives would have to be accepted.
The Mayor charged that the millions of rupees are being given to the members of the provincial assembly, but there are no development funds for the councilors, who are busy in development of the city. They must be given due status and importance, maintaining he stressed.
Dr. Kalimullah on the occasion pointed out that the issues of cleanliness and violation of building code have not been resolved yet. As far cleanliness, the contracts would be given for cleanliness in Quetta on the pattern of Lahore.
We have to work together for betterment of the metropolitan, Dr. Kalimullah stressed further. He also said that he respects all the councilors equally.
Earlier, addressing the gathering, the Deputy Mayor, Muhammad Younas Baloch said that the local bodies institutions has the key status in democracy and democratic system. So, the concerted efforts should be made to flourish them, adding he stressed.
He said that though we don’t claim to resolve all the issues overnight, but we would do every thing possible in this regard mobilizing our available resources and using our energy.
He called on the councilors to serve with dedication for bringing improvement in state of the city affairs.
